Keeping Inventory On Your Technology

Keeping track of all your information technology assets is essential in order to maintain organization and to be prepared in case of a disaster. A complete inventory includes records of what equipment you have, the type of data you possess and where it is located. Another example of vital information is if you are making good use of your assets, such as storage.

There are five necessary steps to a successful IT Asset Inventory:
  • Record crucial information about all equipment. This includes the make, model, serial number, and date of purchase.
  • Gather software installation disks, product keys, and warrantees.
  • Keep a record of usernames and passwords.
  • Separate data according to the level of importance.
  • It is also recommended that all of these documents and paperwork are stored somewhere offsite as well.
