Be Alert for An IRS E-Mail Hoax

The IRS has recently released a statement about a current e-mail hoax that claims to be from the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System. When given a closer look at the message, typographical errors are prevalent throughout. The e-mail may say you are eligible for a federal tax refund, or that your tax payment has not been accepted and requires you to provide personal information that could ultimately lead to identity theft. The subject of the memo reads “Federal Tax Payment ID: ####### has been rejected”. The IRS logo may even be present, but remember the IRS or EFTPS would never ask for any type of secure information over e-mail. The message, before being personalized with your name and specific numbers, resembles the image below.

If the message is replied to or you are redirected to another page, malware can infect your computer. Instead, any e-mails that look suspicious should be forwarded to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.
