CMIT sponsored the LIA event on April 15th that featured former NYC Mayor Edward Koch and U.S. Senator Alfonse D'Amato who came together to discuss the "Future of New York."
The discussion was set in a conversation styled manner and mediated by LIA President Matthew T. Crosson. LIA is an organization that brings together business, labor, education, government, not-for-profits working to make L.I. an even better place to live, work, raise a family, and do business.
There is cause for concern about New York's future and according to Ed Koch, those who currently hold government positions must stand up and do what is right for the people. Al D'Amato agreed by stating that "Leadership qualities of people who stand and say 'no' have dissipated ... there is no sense of urgency with the leadership of the State," D'Amato said. As for the financial state of NY, Koch is a democrat who understands what needs to be done in order to help our businesses, but knows it must be done rationally. He stated, "I'm a liberal with sanity - I know you cannot spend money that you don't have."
Both Koch and Al D'Amato are concerned that there is great anger and tension between New Yorkers and government officials. The people should be able to trust those who've been elected to represent them.
As a result of this discussion, Koch and Al D'Amato are fighting to stand up for what is right and hoping to inspire the idea that plans need to be put into action now in order to help create a brighter future for New York.
