BEWARE OF TAX SCAMS

With tax season in full swing, fraudsters are actively targeting taxpayers with scams that threaten their refund and even their identity. To help you recognize and avoid these IRS impersonation scams, please keep the following tips in mind:

• Be suspicious of any phone calls or emails claiming to be from the IRS, they NEVER call.

• The IRS will:
-Always first contact you by mail.
-Never call to demand immediate payment using a specific method, such as a wire, prepaid debit card, or gift card.
-Never call and threaten to immediately bring in local police.
-Never call and ask you to share sensitive information, like a debit card or checking account number.

• If you think an IRS imposter is calling, hang up immediately. Do not give the caller any personal or financial information.

Tax scams can happen any time, not just at tax time, so it is important to be alert and careful year-round.
